Define customs and commercial responsibilities
Tasks may include booking, pricing, operational monitoring or preparing information for a customs specialist. Clarify what you would personally approve, the systems used and languages needed for communication; also ask how time differences and urgent cases are managed, without assuming the freight forwarder title carries identical authorisations or representation powers in every country.
